As any mom of a toddler will tell you, these kids are messy. It doesn’t matter what they are working on, they will be messy. If they are on the floor playing with Legos, they’re all over the place; if they’re coloring, the Crayon mark is likely to go off the page and onto the table; if they’re eating Cheerios, you can count on the floor getting covered in them too. While I hate the messes that come with toddlers, I do love watching my son play and discover new things. So, when PlaSmart asked if I’d like to review their Messmatz Creativity Mat, I quickly jumped at the opportunity. By the looks of it, I thought this nifty mat could save a lot of cleanup time. And boy was I right!
The Messmatz is made from non-toxic, food-grade silicone and measures 24 inches by 18 inches, so it has plenty of room for playing. It’s firm enough to write and paint on, and rolls up for easy storage. It’s recommended for all ages (but parents will surely love it most!) It’s also available in three colors – blue, green and pink.
One of my son’s favorite things to do is pour water from bowl to cup and back again. We call him a little chemist because he can spend 15 minutes (which is long in toddler time) just playing and playing with water. We often set up a ‘water pouring station’ for him now, which he gets a total kick out of. We used to put towels down, and then set up big bowls, small bowls, cups, spoons, etc. for him to play with, but the water of course still seeped out creating a puddle. Not anymore. With Messmatz I can lay it down and put all of his water-pouring gear right on top. The rimmed edge means the water stays on the mat and doesn’t create a puddle around the play area. Lovely!
I was also able to contain his cars by creating a little town on the mat. We put several of his little buildings into a city configuration, added his cars, and voila!, he had a contained play area and I didn’t have to worry about tripping over toys.
I’m looking forward to using the Messmatz when he finger paints, because it’s going to save my sanity (and my lovely wooden dinner table) for sure.
Not only is this mat great for toys, it’s also great for eating over. We decided to have a little ‘picnic’ on the floor, so I pulled out the trusty Messmatz and you know what? I didn’t have to sweep up all the Cheerios and crumbs! LOVE THIS!
Another benefit of the Messmatz is that it’s easy to clean. A simple wipe-down with a wet cloth or (for messier fun) a rinse with soapy water, and it’s ready to go again.
The Bottom Line
I absolutely love the Messmatz! This wonderful mat will be used daily in my house as it truly does make cleanup so much easier. I don’t have to worry that toys and food will be scattered as it is contained in one area. The lip around it ensure this. Mark this one as a win!
