4 Ways to Shrug It Off and Laugh at Yourself

Have you ever left the house without something that you were supposed to have, like your wallet or your keys? Perhaps you were on your way to the grocery store and realized you did not have your shopping list. I can relate to both of these and I am sure you can relate to one or both as well.

Recently, I believe I set the Guinness world record for mommy forgetfulness. I am a little bit embarrassed to tell you what I did. LOL! But we’re all moms here, right? So here it is… I forgot to put on deodorant. And let me tell you, it has been 100 degrees where I live. Crazy, right?! But wait, there’s more! I also forgot to brush my teeth. Can you believe this!? It was a busy morning shuffle this particular day, and I had to leave the house one hour earlier than normal to take my oldest son to the dentist.

At first, I was so angry with myself as I sat in the car after dropping my three sons off to school. cI thought to myself, “You are a grown woman and you forgot to perform two of the essentials of hygiene.” I scolded myself in my head. I thought about how I should have woken up earlier and how I should have planned the morning out more smoothly (even though I am TYPE A PERSONALITY and rarely do anything without planning first). Then, I broke out in a burst of laughter — pure sheer laughter. I had to laugh at my situation. After every temper tantrum and hearing, “MOM” over 100 times that morning, I had to laugh. After the shoe-throwing and the resistance to wearing the ironed outfit, I had to laugh. Sometimes we have to laugh to keep from crying. Laughter is such a wonderful thing!

As I reflected upon the entire morning, I learned some life lessons that I would like to share:

1. Laughter is the best therapy.

Laughter is good for your mind and good for your soul. Live. Love. LAUGH. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are many benefits of laughter as it relates to stress relief.

2. When life throws you lemons you make lemonade.

We have to make the best out of every circumstance because “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” As a result, we have to be flexible and resilient. We also have to have strong spiritual wellness. Being grounded spiritually allows us to have faith as we face unpredictable situations in life. These situations produce perseverance, character and hope (Romans 5:3-4).

3. Don’t take yourself or life too serious.

If I had allowed myself to continue thinking about the negative, my entire day would have been ruined. I encourage you not to let one bad day become a bad week, month, year, or lifetime. Sometimes as moms, we get so down on ourselves. I ask you to remember that there is always sunshine in the midst of our storm. I believe this so much that I wrote an eBook titled: “When It Rains, It Pours: Seeing Sunshine in the Midst of the Storm.”

4. You live and you learn.

I have learned to be prepared for the next time this happens. I did not say that this will never happen again. Instead, I have prepared for the next time because I am sure this will not be the last time. Preparation is KEY!  I encourage you to make a hygiene bag for your car. I did!

Live. Love. LAUGH.

Until next time, remember YOUR wellness is the key to YOUR quality of life!
