Why do we have dreams that we have not attempted yet? Langston Hughes said it best: “What happens to a dream deferred?”
Raise your hands and scream wildly if you wanted to be a lawyer! Who wanted to travel and help children in poverty stricken countries? Who wanted to write and direct their own film? You got me—that last one is me. We all have dreams, so what stops us from going after them? Kids? Work? Money? None of these are excuses; look closer as they’re just minor hurdles that we have to jump over.
Well, I for one have had enough of carrying my dreams around in my mind like an old suitcase full of clothes from my childhood. That’s right ladies, I have created a plan and given myself 30 days free to at least start on the path for a few of my dreams.
Create a Bucket List
I have created a bucket list of my dreams. The #1 dream that I must achieve is simply to write. Now this includes working on my articles, four, books and two screenplays that I have in mind. After work and family, I have decided to spend any extra hours to just write. In 30 days, I plan to see a great outcome.
My #2 goal is to finally operate a speedboat and WaveRunner (this looks like a motorcycle on water) in Florida. This is something so simple that I could have easily checked it off my list years ago, but I never really got around to it. I’ve always been too busy making sure the kids were happy during summer vacation.
A few other dreams on my bucket list include visiting Ireland (I’m half Irish – seriously – though you’d never know from my picture LOL); visiting Japan, visiting New Zealand… there’s more, but you get my drift.
Follow Your Dreams
Ladies, I encourage you to make your own list and write down everything you want to do or become on it! Then pick the one you want the most and plan out how you can achieve it. Please don’t just go through life working, enjoying two week-long summer vacations, washing, rinsing and repeating. Break the cycle and LIVE! You can be that great wife, mom, and employee, but you can also accomplish your dreams.
If you don’t make an attempt, what will happen? I’ll tell you what will happen from personal experience. You’ll be at work spacing out and thinking about it, like myself. You’ll come home and the kids or husband will greet you and, while you’ll feel the love and embrace them, you will still be thinking about your dreams and how to achieve them. You will become a walking zombie with your head in the clouds.
Don’t let fear or hurdles keep you from becoming even greater ladies, just get out there and do it! By doing so, you’ll become an even better mom, wife, and employee, because you’ll be a better you.
